CCTV Public School Case Study

When it comes to CCTV some sites combine more challenges than others. We were recently approached by a major public school to design and CCTV security solution. The school is set in a site of over100 acres and comprises of a number of separate buildings and roadways. Some of the buildings are connected to the schools LAN while others have no connectivity. The brief was to design a system that would be able to monitor the entry points roadways, car-parks and courtyards both day and night and provide a method of identifying the vehicle. There was also a requirement to carry out automatic camera tours.

The system was required to offer control from two locations and be able to record events onto a hard-drive with the ability to transfer information onto a portable medium if required. The solution was to involve IP fixed cameras, video servers, wireless links with telemetry, fully functional domes and NPR (number plate recognition) cameras with IR illuminators. All cameras were connected via IP connectivity. The two furthest cameras one with NPR including infrared and the second a functional dome with day/night camera had no direct IP connectivity, the solution was to link these two devices via licence exempt secure 2.4GHz radio links one with full telemetry enabling the features of functional dome to be utilised including the x 18 optical zoom. The radio receivers/transceivers were mounted on the same building enabling both units to be connected to a single video server. The operating software is fitted with movement detection and pre and post event recording as standard ensuring that disc space is optimised and that crucial evidence is not lost. Within the first month of operation there has been one arrest and the number unwanted visits has reduced significantly. The system has performed above expectation and a second phase is already in the planning. The use of IP equipment has allowed a powerful system with technically advanced features to be installed at a fraction of the cost of a traditionally hardwired system.
